Living in the City – 5 Ways to Make the Most of your Balcony

small balcony

The majority of people living in the city love the hustle and bustle around them, and take full advantage of the fact that life is more diverse. One of the disadvantages of city life, however, can be the fact that it is much harder to enjoy the great outdoors. Many apartments have a built-in balcony and, regardless of how small yours is, it is entirely possible to find ways of enjoying it. Below are 5 ideas that can be used to help you make the most of your balcony:

  1. A Wide Variety of Plants

Some of the things most people love about the spring and summer months, and enjoying the outdoors, are the beautiful flowers and plants that are everywhere. Plants bring an abundance of positive energy to any environment, including your balcony. They can also be used to create the illusion of having more space, by mixing the variety and sizes. Taller ones will help to elongate the area. Flowers can be put in hanging pots to save space, while still beautifying with their vibrant colours.

  1. Relaxation Area

A small outdoor sofa is a great idea, if your balcony is large enough to accommodate one. Other ideas include chairs or crates with lots of bright cushions and pillows. A hammock is another option, which will certainly encourage everybody to take the time out for an afternoon siesta.

  1. Storage

A small area to keep books, drinks or other balcony necessities make spending time outside more comfortable. Small side tables are perfect or, if space is extremely limited, shelves can be used to solve the problem without sacrificing floor space.

  1. Themed Décor

Bamboo furnishings and hanging plants can bring your balcony back to nature, or old furniture can be used to create a vintage look. Wood flooring is the best outdoor option as it is easy to clean, resistant to frost and makes the space seem larger.

  1. Let the Air in

Sometimes the balcony can be so small that it actually becomes an inconvenience to spend time out there. Just opening the balcony door can let a taste of the outdoors in, helping to brighten up your day without the problem of being cramped in a corner.
